The Blue Door Effect: An Entry Transformation Near Denver

Some projects are structural. This one was psychological. The house near our Denver shop was fine, the entry was fine, everything was relentlessly fine. Then a blue door with a fan transom went in, and suddenly neighbors slowed down on their evening walks. Total time: a day and a half.
Small opening, full protocol
A short job gets the same physics as a long one. The opening was stripped, checked for rot, flashed properly, and the new unit was shimmed square, foamed and sealed. The fan transom above brings daylight into the hallway that the old solid door had kept out for forty years, which the owners now mention more than the color.
The click of a well hung door is a real thing. Doors that need a shoulder are doors that were installed on a Friday afternoon.
Choosing a front door color
Pick the color from across the street, not from a paint chip in your hand, and check it against the roof and shutters at noon and at dusk. Blues and deep greens flatter brick and light siding.
