The Commute Down the Hall: A Home Office Renovation in West Chester

Five years into the remote work era, this West Chester spare room was still commuting under false pretenses: a folding table, a chair borrowed from the dining set, and a Zoom background of laundry purgatory. The owner's work was permanent. The room was pretending otherwise.
A home office renovation is a full room renovation wearing business attire, with three requirements normal rooms skip: sound, light aimed at a camera, and power where furniture actually goes. This project handled all three, and the trim accent wall stole the show on every video call since.
Sound is the real office amenity
The difference between working from home and working from a hallway is what you hear. The biggest single fix is the cheapest: a solid core door with proper weatherstripping at the jamb, which took the household soundtrack down to a rumor. We added mineral wool in the wall shared with the living room while it was open for wiring, an upgrade that costs little mid project and cannot be retrofitted without regret.
This is the same door logic from our Elizabethtown mudroom project, applied to concentration instead of laundry. Solid core doors are the utility players of renovation.
Light for humans and cameras both
Video calls have added a rule to lighting design: the face needs light in front of it, not above it. We planned the desk position first, then lit the room around it, with the window at the desk's side rather than its back, because a window behind you turns every call into a witness protection interview. Overhead went to dimmable LEDs in a warm neutral, per the Department of Energy's LED guidance, which cut the room's lighting draw while ending the flicker its old fixture contributed to every recording.
Outlets got planned like plumbing: a quad behind the desk at desk height, another on the opposite wall for the future layout everyone swears will never happen, and a dedicated circuit note for the space heater we know is coming in January.
The wall that does the talking
The trim accent wall, geometric boxes painted a deep green, faces the camera and has become the owner's professional trademark, complimented in meetings by people who have never asked a single question about the rest of the house.
